Maintaining your Polymer Firearm

Maintaining your Polymer Firearm

As a gunsmith and shooter, one of the things I need to be mindful of is the care of polymer guns.

We think of polymer as a care-free material — after all, it won’t rust!  But don’t be deceived.  Polymer guns need every bit as much if not more care than all-metallic guns, for several reasons.

Todays guns, like today’s car engines, are tightly fit.  Any carbon build-up can cause malfunctions at the worst possible time!  Since most polymer guns are black, it is impossible to notice the carbon build-up… judicious cleaning is a must!

You may not be aware that all-metallic guns stretch over time from heat and the constant pounding of many thousands of pounds per square inch pressure (your 9mm runs about 35000 PSI).  Yes, polymers stretch, too.  And they warp, affecting accuracy and function.

As an aside, most polymer semi’s are also striker-fired, meaning it is not safe to dry fire them without a snap cap.

Polymers can be adversely affected by petroleum-based solvents and lubricants.  In the shop I have to be sure I always use synthetic solvents and lubricants.  Check the labels on your supply of solvents and lubricants.

Finally, there are many parts of your gun’s inner workings that WILL rust, as well as the slide (if not stainless steel), so a light film of oil is best, and NEVER on the firing pin or striker.

If you need me to do a deep ultrasonic cleaning it is only $25.
