In pretty much every church of every denomination (a few pacifists maybe excepted) there are Concealed Weapon License holders who perceive the reality of very the real threats that exist in and out of church. More than 1 in 7 Floridians have CWL’s, some 1.4 million. So, they (we) are out there. HERE’S THE PROBLEM: many churches make a serious error in judgment by thinking THAT IS their security! An active shooter situation in a church service is very scary indeed, but it is small in comparison to the other problem — 5, 10, 20 or more CWL’s standing up in every direction from the shooter, guns drawn. I can tell you some will shoot regardless of bystanders. People will be in the crossfire of other “good guys.” I can tell you few have the skills to pull off a safe and decisive shot. People might die. The church will be on the hook with lawsuits from all injured parties. The church will be “out of business.” Your congregants will not sue you? Maybe or maybe not, but their insurance companies (with their staff attorneys) most certainly will, and your congregants cannot stop them. EVERY church needs a program to make a concerted action to intervene in this type of scenario (these guys are always on suicide missions, so you have no choice but to intervene). EVERY church needs to have professional training and have it well documented. EVERY church has to have a program to manage the CWL’s who do NOT participate in the safety/security team. EVERY church is a potential target. GET A PROFESSIONALLY DESIGNED PROGRAM AND PROFESSIONAL TRAINING IN YOUR CHURCH!
